Within the next 15 years, the U.S. Census projects that more than half of all children in the U.S. will be minorities. Nightly News decided to take a look at this and other changes in the American population in a series of reports.

Here at msnbc.com, we're curious to know your thoughts on our reports. As part of a look at the evolving makeup of our nation, we have a slide show of prominent Americans born to immigrant parents- who have we forgotten? Let us know here. We'd love to hear your own stories about being part of a shifting culture, too.

Also, feel free to leave questions for Paul Cuadros, an author and soccer coach who will be featured in a Nightly News report this week on the struggles of children of immigrants. You can find his Newsvine Q&A here.

I love your comment metonitoo.  We the people here in America are just One Human Race.  One blood color, one death and the last time I check, we all wear our pants one leg at a time.  :-)

I believe that more importantly, we will be exponentially more "multi-ethnic", then maybe we can get rid of this silly notion of race altogether.

If it is for this world to realize, it MUST start here.

My great great great great grandparents who came from Europe to North America, didn't come here to be with people like themselves, they came here for a chance at opportunity.
For the most part, this is still the case today.

If we stop labeling people minorities and just start calling them American's,
we'd be on the right footing for the rest of the 21st century.

If the government really wants trickle down policies,
start be removing the check box for race on government forms.

The hold outs who still consider white and black and brown to be a concern,
are not considering the betterment of America,
they are focused on self interest.

We've seen the results of self interest over the past decade or so of Politics in America.
I wouldn't say that has been exceptional.

My first history teacher in America emphasized that USA is a salad bowl where each bite you take will have a different taste.  My latest history teacher is my daughter, who is 6 and of mixed background.  She loves to mix ketchup, mayo, springle of black pepper with her white rice.  Every bite tastes the same. There is no precise formula to her mixture but somehow it always turns out great.

For so long, we have been preached with the salad bowl theory that we see our world not as melting pot but as pockets of races scatter across the landscape. Instead of promoting unity, we promote fear by labeling, profiling and degrading. Instead of lowering our fences, we are building walls all around us. Perhaps, my daughter's generation would know how to create something wonderful by merging the colors instead of separting them.  I cannot wait to taste her latest creation.

Pennsylvania is a state of that was founded, and there fore the country, by immigrants. Many citizens are second generation.  They may not be famous.  Of course not, they work for what they have and and are proud of it.

This story is discounting of immigrants who have made this country. This is not new.

BTW is Obama an immigrant?  His Father was an exchange student, never a citizen. If you are implying Obama is, we have a problem.

Obama is not an immigrant.  His dad was from Africa but his mom was a native born caucasian kansas girl and Obama himself was born in Hawaii.  Unless you consider Hawaii a different nation.  :-)

Right on Folks!! And that is not a surprise, four countries in the world with multiculturalism as it should be USA, Australia, New Zeeland and Canada. Colonialism built these countries with variety of skin colours. Therefore our children in every one of these countries will be the next generation.

Interesting article, however, America is built upon immigrants.

Spanish, French, British, Africans, Hispanics, Chinese, Japanese and a host of other ethnicities.  What's your point?  Even the pure "Americans" have had children by immigrants.  America - A Rainbow Nation - Wonderful!

One nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all!

Barack Obama will not be the first "immigrant" President.

I'm sure a hundred years ago or so, a similar article probably appeared from the press whose authors were primarily of Western/Northern European descent who were similarly worried about the arrival of those notorious Southern/Eastern Europeans ...
We need to stop worrying about where people come from and focus on what they can do when they get here and what we can do to help them do once they get here ...people are people.

                    Hi Drew,

I appreciate your points and they are well made. I can only speak from my experience and I know that new immigrants are highly prone to criminal activities - hence "the Paddy Wagon" which referenced the inordinate amount of Irish that were locked up weekly in my home town of Boston …and also my heritage.

But that said, I am not ignorant of crime perpetrated by new immigrants and work regularly with new immigrants in the inner city. Although, it may to you seem that I don’t comprehend your plight, but I do.

In 1950 my city was 50% Irish (by name statistics). The English blue-bloods were pissed. They moved out in groves to the Western suburbs.

In the late 1960’s and early 1970’s my city had a huge influx of immigrants from the Caribbean and the South (primarily of African-American heritage) and then later from Southeast Asia.

We got rattled for being “racist”. But what we were, like you, was displaced people. The long avenue I grew up with which had 50 Irish Pubs (and one Jewish Deli) became Saigon’s Main Street and Caribbean Carnival.

But we survived. You will too. New people bring good and bad. Early on it may be more bad than good, but that is dictated by economcs, not the quality of the people.

But read my earlier blog regarding the Jennifer’s  …

Yes, it is true that America has become a nation of diversity. This can be seen as a great blessing for the US, but also as not. Here in the NE part of the US in PA we have seen a vast majority of influx if you will "non-white" Americans--or if you will Americans and immigrants as more are non US Citizens. The once peaceful countryside has grown from small towns to if you will "cities" where the CRIME has grown considerably that the, if you will "locals", are becoming increasing more afraid to live here anymore. Where once peaceful serenity has turn into racial turmoil and crime! Yes, to have a more diverse society is nice, but in this area of the US, people have moved here from all locations of the US, but mostly from NY and NJ and non-US Citizens, and with them come the ever so-called crime and murders where people are afraid to even shop anymore. The taxes have risen dramatically where the average local person is drowning and where as the non-locals have moved here and still commute back and forth to the "city" (NY) or only come here on the weekends and this vast majority of influx has ruined this beautiful countryside. But the crime is the major factor of all where people are afraid anymore--the once beautiful area where you didn't have to lock your doors has turned into a high tax, crime area where a vast majority are still commuting back and forth to the city. Industry keeps moving away due to the high cost of taxes. But the ever fearing threat of crime is the one major concern here and when you read police blotter after police blotter, the people committing these crimes are not local people, that have come here from the city and have brought their if you will "city ways" and a lot are non US Citizens. I have heard and have seen a lot where if you will, "they owe me" attitude. So I think the US is still in "sad shape" in this aspect and the once dominate race of caucasian or white, slowly diminishing and probably will be the next so-called "third world country".  This to me is sad, the US government should wake up and take a long hard picture of the US--diversity is good but when it comes to all the immigrants and time after time of raids on businesses who have hired these non US workers-------ship them all back---pay taxes and become a US Citizen. Stop the outsourcing in the US and bring the jobs back to the US, concentrate on the United States of America. The USA is in need of help in all aspects of the so-called American dream---the American dream is slowly diminishing!

Don't forget that many of the "Greatest Generation" were children of immigrants who arrived from the late 1800's to early 1900's. It's a cycle that is characteristic of the USA simply because all of us, except for the Native Americans that we've displaced from their homes, came from someplace else.

IF diversity is so good? Why are we having this discussion? Is it because we are not conviced of that? or is it because we can't -as individuals- stop resorting to the color of the skin, the language,  facial traits, the food people eat, etc to create division lines among ourselves? Why is it so difficult to "see the character" in people? I think that it has to do more with modern society. It has to do with the fact that WE are so disconnected with who we are that we are BLIND to others and who THEY ARE? There's is no political solution to this problem nor social restructuring that will make it better. It has to be a INDIVIDUAL, CONSCIOUS choice to open to each other and try to understand who we are.

About crime. Why is it that always crime is associated with minorities? Isn't it more logical thay crime has to do with poverty and ignorance and discrimination? It does not have to do anything with race - I hate the word. If not ask any boy or girl that has to deal with lack with being almost invisible just because their parents were born in a different country. Because to me the obvious is that when you give human being the opportunities and the conditions to be their best thay will do it.

We need to care more about each other.

'Minority' to me is a detestable political label. This label is basically used so as to perpetuate discrimination in a polite sense. It should have ended with desegregation. I do not remember a time when this label has been used in reference to someone and a person never turned to look at the other again. I also never understand why anyone born of a caucasian parent and another race is never thought to be of caucasian heritage but rather that of the other parent. For instance, Obama is never "white" but instead is 'black". To me the sooner this issue of belonging to either a certain minority is purely for political and economic expediency. I believe it is the reason that we have seen Obama while bidding to become the next US President is attacked in a heavily coded language suggestive of his heritage and therefore should not be trusted. The sooner the country goes 3/4 in 'minorities' as 'majority' the better!

                                      Hello Everyone,

I am from the Phoenix area. We have a problem! Phoenix has become the place of the second most kidnappings in the world, next to Mexico City. The Drug war in Mexico is about to spill over into the U.S. if it hasn't already, and the population of Mexico is on its way over too. I find it incredible that no one else is as concerned as I am, but then again I shouldn't bem just look at their names mostly hispanic. I can't stand illegal immigrants, I can't stand the new President, I can't stand his new policies that are killing the economy, I can't stand that most of White America hasn't stood up to deal with this cancer that is illegal immigration and deteriation of the America I love. Why is it that immigrants have the attitude as though they are owed something from me? Why is it that they fly the Mexican flag over the U.S. flag? Why is it that cities like LA and Phoenix allow hispanics, mostly who I presume to be illegal, to congregate and protest at the expense of the state, ie you and me? What would happen if wire transfers to Mexico were cut off? What would happen if there was a physical wall and presence at the border to catch all intruders? What if America wasn't afraid of protecting the values it was built on? Call me a racist or anyother word you like, I am a red-blooded American! Actually I don't want to be confused since everyone has red blood, I am a White American!
